Question What are Scan Convertors?

Scan converters are devices that convert computer-video signals into a signal that is compatible with a television. Sometimes a scan converter is referred to as a "PC to TV" converter or a "PC to video" converter. The concept seems simple, but scan converters use complex technology to achieve signal conversion because computer signals and television signals are very different.

There are several factors to consider when selecting a scan converter:

  • What is the scan converter's computer input compatibility?

  • What is the maximum resolution your computer uses?

  • Does your application require genlocking?

  • What is the scan converter's color bit sampling?

  • What is the quality of the scan converter's encoder?

  • Which video formats does your application require?

    Question How are they used?

Anytime you want to display a computer-generated image on an NTSC or PAL-based device, like a TV or VCR, you must use a scan converter. Typically, scan converters are used in applications such as video production in a computer-based training environment, videoconferencing, distance learning, broadcasting, and production. In the diagram, a VSC 200D scan converter is taking in a video signal from a high-resolution computer. The scan converter encodes that signal to be compatible with NTSC or PAL-based components. The encoded signal is then output to various display devices—betacam, VCR, and a videoconferencing system.
