Anytime you want to display a computer-generated image on an NTSC or PAL-based device, like a TV or VCR, you must use a scan converter. Typically, scan converters are used in applications such as video production in a computer-based training environment, videoconferencing, distance learning, broadcasting, and production.
In the diagram, a VSC 200D scan converter is taking in a video signal from a high-resolution computer. The scan converter encodes that signal to be compatible with NTSC or PAL-based components. The encoded signal is then output to various display devices—betacam, VCR, and a videoconferencing system.
