Question What are Switchers?

Switchers enable multiple video and audio signals to be selected and sent to one or more display devices. For example, to view two computers with separate presentations, a switcher would be used to physically connect both of the inputs to the display device. The switcher would then be used to select or "switch" between the two computer presentations, allowing the user to alternate back and forth.

To select the right switcher for a specific environment, begin by identifying the following things:

  • What are the signal types (e.g., computer, composite video, RGB, stereo audio)?

  • What are the connector types (e.g., BNC, S-video, 15-pin HD)?

  • How many inputs and outputs are needed?

  • Will there be switching between both video and audio sources?

  • When more outputs are needed than are available on a single DA, the amplifiers can be looped together. That means the output of one DA can be fed into the input of another.

    Question How are they used?

Switchers can be used in a wide range of applications where multiple video and/or audio sources are being displayed by one or more devices: in lecture halls, conference rooms, home theaters, etc.
Here's an example of an application using a switcher. Two laptop computers are connected to the Extron SW2 VGA DA2 A, a two input switcher and distribution amplifier. The video and audio signals from the computer are then output to two video display devices - a monitor and an LCD projector - and one stereo audio device. Users can now route the video from each computer for display on either the projector or the monitor.

    Question Categories

After determining the input and presentation display device, you can figure out which switcher is best for your application. Extron switchers are organized in the following categories:

    Audio/Video Switchers

There are Extron A/V switchers for composite video, S-video, component, SDI, and/or stereo audio with any number of inputs to choose from. With the ability to accept NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats, these switchers provide worldwide compatibility.>

    Computer & RGB Switchers

Extron VGA and RGB switchers are designed for routing computer-video signals. They are available in dedicated models that feature VGA (15-pin HD) or BNC input and output connectors.

    MediaLink™

Extron MediaLink Switchers (MLS) enable system expansion when more inputs are required than what the projector can handle. MediaLink Switchers are designed to be used in conjunction with the MLC 206 MediaLink Controller to facilitate low-cost integration. They can also be used as stand-alone switchers.

    Media Presentation Switchers

Extron Media Presentation switchers merge independent VGA with stereo audio switchers, S-video with stereo audio switchers, and composite video with stereo audio switchers into a single enclosure. With a built-in Program Audio and microphone mixer, these switchers are ideal for small, one-projector presentation environments.

    System Switchers

Extron System switchers are compatible with all types of digitally controlled projectors and accept virtually all source signals. With system switchers, it's easy to switch between computers, A/V components, and audio sources. System switchers communicate with and are recognized by the projector as if the switcher were the same brand as the projector.
